Ask Angie - Potty Training
Here's how it works - anyone can ask questions: specific or general, privately in an email or in the comments below, as long as its kid related. After I give the question some serious thought - I'll give my best answer - not theoretical - but at least one solid suggestion - something unique - something you haven't read everywhere. And then, everyone can chime in - if you agree or disagree - or perhaps you have another suggetsion. My feelings won't be hurt because I'm just wanting to help and maybe one of you have a better plan. My ultimate wish is that Ask Angie posts are a safe place to ask and discuss the hard questions about being a parent.
How did you potty train when you knew the time had come?

Thank you for this. We are really struggling to know what to do. I just read 2 books and they seemed completely unhelpful. Avery doesn't seem to grasp even the difference between pee and poop which she really should. And I am really not okay yet with the pants off concept - we live in too small of quarters for pee all over the place. Any suggestions since you know my apartment so well? Maybe I will just work with the new pull-ups and hopefully she'll get the hang of it. I am just so lost!!! I like the potty toy idea. So thank you for this.
Angie you're awesome. I wish I had you next door so I could come over every day for advice! I'm in the same spot as Laurel - Audrey has no clue. She used to tell me when she was poopy, but that lasted for like 2 weeks. I may have to use the pull-ups because I've already got enough clean up when she has her throw up issues.
laurel, if she isn't grasping the basic concept - i would say definitely start with the "wet liner" pull-ups (or whatever brand does it). its truly a different era than our parents where most kids weren't potty trained by two - now its much later - because kids really don't know they are even doing it. The only warning is - the first time they try the pull-ups they may be horrified because they will feel like they spilled or did something wrong(which is really upsetting to some kids) - so be prepared to watch them like a hawk and when the pee (you'll see it in their eyes if they feel something different than normal) be prepared to give them the words...you are peeing - wow - you are just like mommy - so big...something like that in a high encouraging tone! and then do it over and over and over
I was really lucky with CArly and potty-training...she pretty much did it on her own with only 2 acciednts! She never even needed pull-up for bedtime! I know, so blessed! But, here's my latest baby dilemna...weaning! When? How? Carly self-weaned, but I have the feeling that Wesley is thw type that would nurse forever. I'm really done and I want to quit, but whenever I try it seems as though he's taking it personal?

i've had really good luck potty training my first two kids. all your ideas sound great. something that worked well for both of our kids was to forego the small toddler potty and have them sit on the big toilet with one of those squishy insert seats and a little step stool to get up there. neither of them liked the little potty, and i didn't like the idea of having to empty it. ick. we kept our little potty, though, and always had it in the car (trunk or the back, whatever). It helped us to avoid MANY a public restroom. we used it so many times in parking lots, at parks, etc. highly recommend that, if it's an option. i know some of your friends live in NYC and don't have cars. :)
leslie, i too am a fan off using the big potty right off the bat(with the smaller seat insert - rather than a separate one; largely for ny space reasons, but mostly because i hate the idea of training for a small potty and then having to transition to the big - i avoid extra steps)
love "Ask Miss Angie." Thanks for the potty training tips. We've become a bit lax. How about how to transition from a crib to a big bed? Please, do tell.
