Birthday Blues

So James turns 6 in about a week and a half. I'm blue that he's getting older, but I'm also just blue about the party. He keeps talking about these grand birthday ideas - inviting his whole school class and such. And I'm not really up to a big bash - nor do I want to spend billions on a party. Not to mention the fact I haven't planned anything yet. So, what should I do? Any fun, cheap, semi-social ideas?

I tried to think back to birthday parties that I loved as a kid and the best thing I can think of that fits your qualifications (although not really semi-social) is an activity driven party at a local park. Basically an Elementary School recess going undercover as a birthday party. One of my favorite birthday parties like this I attended was setup as a basketball tournament. When you arrived at the party you were assigned to a team and then you played a round-robin type of setup. And the parents of the birthday boy gave out ribbons at the end (not first place, second place, third place...but more like coolest uniform, craziest hook shot, funkiest moves). Of course if no one likes basketball there then you could have yourself a problem.
Another similar party I enjoyed took place at Mitchell Park in Palo Alto. This one was more like the Olympics because we played multiple events (soccer, football, tennis, horseshoes, tag games). There was also a playground there to mess around on.

ok, i'm not that upset - i just reread this and i sound whiney - its not really that bad...i'm not that blue. in truth, i think i was more excited about using blue fonts so i exaggerated the blueness. but, i do need ideas!

there's a website i've used for fun craft ideas and gooey halloween recipes, they might have some cheap, fun birthday party ideas: familyfun.com. if i think of anything else, i'll let you know! good luck! i'm sure it will turn out great!

Is he too old for Chucky Cheese? Or is that lame and lazy? Well, I'm lame and lazy so we did this before. Easy.
